Water desalination and green electricity production

Sea water desalination to get portable drinking water and green electricity at the same time

here is how it happens
Microbial desalination cell (MDC) is an emerging bio-electrochemical system. This is considered as one of the promising technologies for clean water and energy production. MDC technology is a derivative of the microbial fuel cell (MFC). This study reports bench-scale laboratory desalination using MDC loaded with granular coconut shell carbon, as a new electrode material in the anode compartment.

Talk to the birds; talk to the trees

Talk to the birds; talk to the trees
Talk to the sky; I want to talk to them please
Ask them questions: wait for answers
While I quaintly watch the grass blades dances'

Talk to the butterflies; talk to the bees
Ask them what colors they like the most
Reds or yellows? Blues or greens?
Bumchica mauve bumble beans!

Rainy days or the sunny days
Or was it last winter or autumn
I was just waiting for spring
When all the flowers blossom

I wish to ask to flowers
“Who blessed you with colors?” So vivid and true!
“Who gave you the fragrance?” I have no clue
And to the sky, who gave you the blue?

Radiance of the early morning sunbeams
Holy dew upon grass,
Inside every shining dew -a rainbow
A thousand rainbows shimmers: like Venetian glass

Early in the day break when life starts commotion
I am amazed at the mysteries
So, I want to talk to the birds; talk to the trees
Talk to the sky; I want to talk to them please

I love my tresses long and curly

I love my tresses long and curly
Shiny, silky, bulky, blacky - browny
Sometimes curled–up bun
Sometimes curled-down pony

It is silky and soft when the sun goes up
Soft and silky when the sun goes down
Not messed up in my beauty sleep
Color streaks, love them as they peep

I am the girl with the long, curly tresses
Braids, buns, pony, plaits
Twisted, tangled, bundled or muddled
All styles should be healthy in the puddle

Pinned, clipped, brushed or permmed
Whatever be the style, I have it crowned
One look, one touch, I would want to feel it as much
Oh Dove! I should thank you a bunch

Few pics of me and my tresses ...

Social media - game changer ? or influencer?

Social media campaign can swing 3%-4% of votes, and that can change history!

The social media users in urban India reaches approximately 86 million in October 2013, and 91 million by December 2013, according to the report ‘Social Media in India – 2013’ by the Internet and Mobile Association Of India (IAMAI) and IMRB. Social media users are expected to grow by 19% between June and December 2013. The report also says that 19.8 million users, use mobile phones to access social media platforms in urban India.

Social media is a treasure-trove of information and it provides this information on a highly accessible and interactive platform. It can be used for generating awareness in any field. We can use social media innovatively for elections by creating standardized messages, spreading it through various channels viz., facebook, twitter, wechat, youtube, google+ etc. Information becomes highly accessible for the masses via social media

It is also reported by Mobile Association Of India (IAMAI) that the highest proportion of social media usage in the top four metro cities & the non metros was among the demographic segment “Young Men” with 30% and 26% penetration levels respectively. Interestingly, the report finds that younger women are increasingly using social media, whereas, in the other metros & small metros, “College Going Students” show the highest proportion of social media usage. “Working Women” demographic segment is observed as having the lowest proportion of social media usage in other, small & non-metros whereas they show a moderate proportion of social media usage in the top four metros.

So can social media be a game changer in the forth coming elections…. ??

A study by research group IRIS Knowledge Foundation and the IAMAI, says that social media can have a “high impact” on approximately 160 of the 543 constituencies in the next election, and that no contestant should ignore this medium. The study said 316 constituencies will have something from “low” to “no impact”.

“I don’t call it a game changer, but an accelerator in this election … it’s definitely setting a narrative, it is influencing a lot of people,” says Arvind Gupta, head of the BJP’s IT division, in an interview

“I think it can be a game influencer, but I wouldn’t go beyond that at this stage … social media happens to offer an additional way, not a substitute for any of the traditional means of campaigning,” says Tharoor, one of the active Twitter users in Indian politics

How do we inspire and mobilize India's youth innovatively to vote in the Indian General Elections 2014 using social mobile apps?

There is a need to sensitize society on the significance and benefits of voting and effectively utilizing the voting rights. There is a need to identify the gaps. We have a need to find out how innovatively and effectively we can use social media as a vote mobilizing mechanism. There is a need to build a more informed, engaged and prepared society

Social media has proven extensively popular in the international elections sphere for example the US of A, Well this is a relatively novel concept in India, but now it cannot be ignored. Mobilizing the youth requires community involvement for which social media can be used in the following innovative ways:

• Information is the key. Social media plays a big role is spreading information. Social responsibility should be taught in school since it is better to catch them young.

• Easy to use online-web based-online interface can be implemented. A unique voter ID, supported by a bio-metric scanning for eg., Iris scanning should enable people to vote from any location. Mobile voting, telephone voting, using internet banking as a portal to voting online, car pooling, voting vans, online absentee voting should be encouraged. The news about the same can be spread using social media.

• We need to provide equal opportunity and accessibility to all citizens by taking advantage of the resources and technology we already have to save money and energy.

• Metric based messaging can be used to spread the above information. Currently, metrics are used to evaluate effectiveness of advertisement/communication services. Social media analytics can be used to track the voting system with demographics. This helps in better understanding of the voting scenario.

• "Social Voting" is a recent approach to voter absenteeism that introduces accountability and incentives into the voting process. 'No excuse' mail-in voting campaigns use existing technology (voter rolls) to encourage people to mail their ballots in. The mail-in ballots technology can be made available for hyper-local tracking of results !

• To evaluate the best options of social media messaging and their impact to fit incentive based effective scenarios. Incentive based, can be something like if an individual goes to vote, he or she will get a 5% cash back on the next purchase at a famous store. Basic amenities like LPG subsidies can be given only to people who have voted.

• Standard inspiring, creative, intriguing slogan templates can be made for each election that can be communicated via the various apps available in social media

• Young people can be inspired to make teasers on you tube and they can be circulated in colleges and among young professionals. The most popular youtube video may be later awarded …

• Free hugs campaign can be run at voting booths :)

Using Social Media Apps the system meets people where they are... in their homes....

Snorkeling with a Stranger - Exploring Underwater at Havelock Island

Recently, I planned a trip to Andaman with a lot of expectations, and land there with a bunch of strangers. Travelling with people whom we don’t know is not easy. I would rather advice not to do so if you are not an adventurer. It may be fun if everyone is like minded, but might become stressful if its otherwise.

I am a person who always enjoys people, different kinds, the ones that come in different shapes and sizes, tall, short, colors etc. It was always a pleasure for me to watch how people behave in different scenarios.
Some people live the moment and enjoy the freedom, and some are grim. This time, I was caught between dissimilar people. Soon after landing at Port Blair, I realized that what I have gotten myself into. I always believed that happiness should begin from inside of us and spread outside. Many a times, we crave to derive happiness from outside but, we forget the treasure is inside us… so I had decided that the reason behind my happiness will be me and not my company

I am a hydrophobic person. I can’t even walk in 3 ft water. Why water, I can’t walk straight on stand. I slip and fall on flat surfaces. Well my best friends know me! I am a person who screams on top of my voice on seeing the sea. Scuba Diving, I am not supposed to do. Well there was some bleeding in my ears, since I ventured into learning swimming to get rid of hydrophobia. I landed damaging some membrane in my ear. So doctor told me no scuba for a month!

on the ski boat to Elephant Beach...

Well, then the next choice is snorkeling. I go to Elephant Beach in Havelock for snorkeling. I get geared up for snorkeling. I was given that mask which blocks the nose completely and has a goggle over the eyes. Now the snorkel, Abhijeet teaches me how to bite the hold the snorkel with my teeth in my mouth, and how I should breathe only via my mouth. Before I start the story, let me introduce Abhijeet. Abhijeet is a localite at the Elephant beach who was going to be my snorkel guide. He says, if something is wrong I should signal to him. He gives me the tube, I wear for floating on water.

He teaches me how to snorkel in the shallow waters and I was ready to take on the great big ocean…Abhijeet goes in front of me, I am touching his hand and going behind him… we go a little further, and then a little further… I feel choked. The water had entered the snorkel and we had to pull it out and empty it.

He tells me to bite it tight and I do the same. We start again. I get choked again. I call him, I say “ I m not able to breathe with this snorkel thing” He looks at me and asks,”Can you hold your breath for some time under water? Will you be fine?” I say “ I can” . Then, I remove the snorkel and I hold my breath under water, when I have to breathe I come up above water. This was very comfortable. I was excited …
We keep going into the ocean further deeper and deeper. He showed me colorful corals, pink, purple, yellow and violet. Bunches of colorful fishes moving here and there. Big gigantic sea cucumbers, it was more than 45 mins, I lost track of time, looking at the amazing wonders below the waters in the ocean. It was new fairy world out there…

Suddenly Abhijeet says, “give me a minute, I will be back” and he vanishes… I look around there is only water everywhere, I don’t see the shore anywhere. We had probably snorkeled a few kilometers, I don’t know! Abhijeet is not there, my heart sank for a moment, I go down underwater to see if Abhijeet is there. Oh yes, there. He was far deep down, I didn’t have a clue what he was upto. Few seconds I kept looking at him …he then came back up from the ocean floor and asked me close my eyes and show my hands.

He gives me something in my hand and asks me to open my eyes. It was a lovely colorful shell.

He says “This is from me to you” and some more shells later on...

I will never forget that moment in my life. It was so beautiful a gesture. Then we slowly snorkeled and came back to the shore. As a gift he gave me his swimming tube, autographed, for me to learn swimming :)

Some strangers can make certain moments memorable for a life time. I don’t know if I will ever meet Abhijeet again. But I will not forget him

What my hairstyle says

My hair talks to me everyday. It mostly complained that I never took care. I travel a lot and forget to nourish and pamper my hair. Every time I am back home my hair needed a rehab. Dad gives me a head massage with a hair spa. Then my hair looks all awesome and beautiful. I love the way my hair is naturally wavy, curly and twisted. I love it when my hairstyle matched my mood. I've compiled a humorous little list of what message my hair conveys on a given day.

What my hairstyle says:

All down with well set defined curls:
This took a long time and costed me some money so, I must be going somewhere where I want to look good.

Loose, messy braid:
I am going to sleep, so my hair should all be staying tied up

French braid:
There is lot of work so I cant be combing my hair in between.

Tight ballerina bun:
I am going on some serious official business.

Messy bun:
It is a hot day, I am not able to tolerate my hair touching my neck.

Hat/cap:
The kiss curls have just started growing, I should keep them tucked in.

Ponytail:
I am going jogging-sporty sporty feelin'.

Wet n curly look:
I am going out with friends

Fish tail braid:
I have oiled my hair and it's so convenient.

Wet and let down to air-dry with jasmine flowers:
I must be wearing a saree and going for a marriage.

Side ponytail:
In the party mood or mebbe I have planned to sweep some guy off his feet ;)

All down & straight:
Ironed it because it was too messy.

Hair flying in all possible directions:
I forgot the hairpins

Frizzy and messy :
I m having a bad hair day and a bad mood day

None of the hairstyles look good :
I haven't washed my hair for the past 2-3 days :(. Its all sticky sticky

I used to live in the US sometime back and I have a very good experience with TRESemmé ! My hair used to be all silky and shiny. When I came back to India, I was a little disappointed to see that TRESemmé was not here anywhere! Now that it is available my hair smiles.

Always remember to wear a smile, carry an attitude, look confident to rock the ramp :). Here are some of my favorite ramp ready hairstyles...
